What is silicone?
Silicone is a product manufactured from silicon, an element found in sand. It has both rubber- and plastic-like properties and can be shaped or formed, softened or hardened into basically anything.
Silicone has many benefits including tolerance to low and high temperatures, thermal stability, excellent insulation properties and resistance to water. It also carries flame retardant properties and is less prone to deterioration than other materials.
How does silicone differ from natural rubber?
Natural rubber is derived from latex, a substance extracted from a rubber tree. Latex is elastic, malleable, and has a high tensile and mechanical strength, but it is vulnerable to heat, UV rays, and degradation.
Silicone on the other hand can withstand extremes in temperature as well as UV and oxidation damage.
How is silicone used?
Silicone rubber extrusions are used by several industries including commercial, medical, food production, construction, consumables, and many others. Extruded silicone products are extruded in a range of shapes and are used to provide vibration dampening, noise reduction, thermal shielding and insulation, and sealing flexibility for various industry applications.
At NWRE, we provide extruded silicone products designed to meet a range of application requirements. Request a quote for your silicone extrusions today. We also provide value added services such as hand building, part marking and splicing to deliver a product that is ready for immediate use.
