Which Elastomeric Material Is Right for You?

Natural rubber isoprene (NR) typically contains other materials, such as proteins, fatty acids, resins, and inorganic materials. Because the tire industry is considered one of the fastest growing end-use industries, more demand is growing for eco-friendly tires and the need for isoprene. Natural rubber has some advantages such as excellent compression set resistance, good resilience and abrasio, good tear resistance, and moderate cost. Some disadvantages include poor petroleum oil resistance, poor weather resistance, and moderate high temperature resistance.

Another option within the automotive industry is thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV). It can be used in air conditioning hose covers, fuel line hose covers, vacuum tubing, vacuum connectors, seals, body plugs, bushings, protective sleeves, shock isolators, etc. Some advantages of thermoplastic vulcanizate include good weather resistance, good abrasion resistance, and good low temperature resistance. Some disadvantages are poor chemical resistance, poor compression set resistance at high durometer, and moderate high temperature resistance.
